The Agency of Natural Resources plans for the management of its state-owned lands through the development of long-range management plans (LRMP). Currently the draft LRMP for the Victory Management Unit (pdf) is available for public review and comment.
Background
The Victory Management Unit (VMU) is approximately 24,000 acres across three parcels: Victory Basin WMA, Victory State Forest, and Darling State Park. The State Park is the Burke ski mountain and has skiing, hiking, biking, and other intensive uses. The State Forest and WMA are large forested and wetland areas with dispersed uses and some recreational trails (horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling).
Ecologically, the Basin is a rare, large wetland and spruce-fir forest area, featuring boreal birds including gray jay, blackbacked woodpecker, rusty blackbird, moose, a very large deer wintering area and snowshoe hare.
Management goals for the Victory Management Unit include strategies to:
Provide a range of public use and recreational experiences for visitors.
Provide habitat for many species of plants and animals.
Sustainably provide forest products for the local economy.
Provide examples of sustainable forest and habitat management for the public.
