June is Pride Month and 2021 marks the 51st celebration – a time when people come together in support of the LGBTQ community. June also marks the official opening of most Vermont State Parks and end of mud season restrictions on hiking trails throughout the state. The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources (ANR) stewards more than 350,000 acres of public lands on behalf of Vermont and our visitors as a source of inspiration and enjoyment for all.

Free Lake Science Seminar Offered June 4

May 27, 2021 – Warmer days and spring flowers are sure signs that summer is coming in Vermont but so is the announcement of the annual Vermont Lake Seminar. Anyone curious about lakes in Vermont is welcome to join this year’s 17th annual Vermont Lake Seminar on Friday June 4, 2021. The free event is open to the public and will run from 9:00am until 2:30pm. At the event, attendees can hear more about lake and watershed science as well as receive practical on-the-ground tips for lakeshore property owners.

Waterbury Reservoir Remote Campsites Can Now Be Reserved in Advance

May 21, 2021 - Each year, more than 75,000 visitors enjoy the natural and recreational opportunities offered at Vermont’s 863-acre Waterbury Reservoir. Little River State Park, Waterbury Center State Park, and the surrounding Mt. Mansfield State Forest land offer access to boating, swimming, paddling, fishing, camping, hiking, and mountain biking. The recently improved boat launches at the Waterbury Dam, Blush Hill, and Moscow Paddlers’ access areas have allowed easier access for boaters and remote campers.

Green Mountain Conservation Camp ‘Work-cation’ Weekends

May 11, 2021 - The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is looking for volunteers to join them for fun-filled weekends to get the camps ready for the 2021 season. This year, the GMCC Kehoe ‘workcation’ weekend will be May 15-16 and the GMCC Buck Lake workcation weekend will be May 22-23.

Vermont Fish & Wildlife Warden Service Pledges to Advance Women in Policing

National 30x30 Pledge Aims to Bring More Women into Policing to Improve Public Safety, Community Outcomes, and Trust in Law Enforcement

May 5, 2021: The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Warden Service has signed on to the 30x30 Pledge to adopt a series of low and no-cost actions policing agencies can take to improve the representation and experiences of women in law enforcement.

Vermont Fish and Wildlife Partners with Intervale Center to Offer Spring Outdoor Programs

May 5, 2021 – The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department will be working in partnership with the Intervale Center in Burlington, VT this spring and summer. Programs will provide a variety of outdoor opportunities connecting participants to the nature around the beautiful forests and fields of the Intervale ecosystem.

Sustainable Harvesting of Wild Plants

Early spring is a great time to get outside for hikes, birding and collecting wild edibles. High on the list of the latter category are fiddleheads (the unfurling leaves of ostrich ferns) and ramps (wild leeks). Both species are quite common in Vermont, but excessive harvest has resulted in local population declines, according to the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department.

While commercial harvest of either of these species is prohibited on state and conservation lands, there is no regulation on private property.

April 26, 2021 – The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says as temperatures warm, songbirds return and the ice recedes, a shift in fish behavior also occurs. Many fish species found in lakes and ponds throughout Vermont become more active, feed more regularly and provide a great fishing opportunity.

Vermont Outdoors Adds Features to Fish & Wildlife Department Mobile App

April 26, 2021 – Last fall the Fish and Wildlife Department developed a new mobile application to help people recreate outdoors in a safe and socially distanced manner. The app, Vermont Outdoors, connects the public with department lands, fish and wildlife regulations as well as up-to-date COVID guidance.
