Unpermitted Salvage Yard Leaks Chemicals, Fined $29,000

MONTPELIER – An unpermitted salvage yard operating in Vershire is now required to pay a $29,000 penalty after failing to follow orders to clean-up oil and gasoline spills and wastes on its property.

The Agency of Natural Resources announced today the issuance of a Judgment Order against Allen LaFlamme, owner of Allen’s Affordable Auto Salvage in Vershire, for multiple violations of Vermont Salvage Yard and Hazardous Waste laws. Mr. LaFlamme must pay a $29,000 penalty and comply with corrective actions.

Vermont Foodbank and partners note 40% increase

MONTPELIER – The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources and the Vermont Foodbank announced today a 40% increase in food donations in 2016, topping the 25-30% increase seen in 2015. This announcement comes during September’s Hunger Action Month. It confirms healthier, fresher foods like fruits, vegetables and frozen meat, are making their way into refrigerators and onto plates of Vermonters in need.

Invasive Asian Clam Discovered in Vermont Waters

Montpelier, Vt. – State officials recently discovered the presence of an invasive clam species in Lake Bomoseen. The Asian clam has been documented in surrounding regions like Lake George, NY, but has not been found in Vermont until now.

Final Proposed Rule - AMPs for Water Quality on Logging Jobs

The Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation filed the Final Proposed Revised Rule for Acceptable Management Practices for Maintaining Water Quality on Logging Jobs in Vermont (AMPs) with the Legislative Committee on Administrative Rules (LCAR) and the Secretary of State's Office on August 23, 2016. LCAR will consider the Final Proposed Rule at its September 8, 2016 meeting. Click here for details.

State Issues Water Quality Certification for Morrisville Hydroelectric Project

Montpelier, Vt. – The Vermont Agency of Natural Resources today issued a final Water Quality Certification for local hydroelectric company Morrisville Water and Light. The certification includes conditions that the company must follow in order to meet current Vermont Water Quality Standards.

State Seeks Input on Draft Plan to Restore Lake Champlain

Public Meetings Scheduled for End of August

MONTPELIER — The State of Vermont is seeking comments on a draft implementation plan for the restoration of Lake Champlain. The plan, entitled “Vermont Lake Champlain Phosphorus TMDL Phase 1 Implementation Plan,” outlines actions the State must take to reduce phosphorus pollution sources that currently compromise State waters. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a set of phosphorus pollution targets in June that the State must meet in its phase 1 plan.
