MONTPELIER – The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Drinking Water and Groundwater Protection Division staff educate septic system owners about proper septic system care and maintenance all year long. During EPA’s annual Septic-Smart week on September 21- 25, additional public outreach activities are planned.
Burlington – State Agency officials, representatives from the Vermont Foodbank, and local grocers joined together at the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf to recognize the contribution of food rescue to hunger relief. Since July 2015, when requirements for food diversion took effect for medium-sized institutions under Vermont’s Universal Recycling Law, the Vermont Foodbank has seen a 24% increase in food donations from retailers over last year. Food shelves are fuller, and less waste is going to the landfill.
MONTPELIER – In conjunction with the U.S. EPA, Vermont officials are celebrating Septic-Smart Week by encouraging Vermont residents and business owners to learn about, and properly maintain, their septic systems.
Over 50% of Vermont households depend on septic or other types of onsite systems to treat their wastewater. In addition, many businesses and park facilities use these types of systems.
Failure to maintain a septic system can lead to backups and surfacing of sewage which can result in costly repairs.
DEC Approves New Plan to Protect and Restore Tributaries to Northern Lake Champlain
Essex Junction, Vt. - The Department of Environmental Conservation approved a new plan to improve water quality in Lake Champlain. The Northern Lake Champlain Direct Drainages Tactical Basin Plan Plan compiles over two years of work focused on the health of the basin and development of targeted actions to remediate and protect surface waters.

Activities at Dead Creek Wildlife Day are especially for people who enjoy hunting, fishing, birdwatching, or learning about Vermont’s diverse wildlife. The event will be held at the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department’s Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) on Route 17 west of Route 22A.
Two public hearings will be held to receive comment on a new rule proposed by the Agency of Natural Resources that would allow the Agency Secretary to designate connector trails for use by all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) on public lands owned by the Agency of Natural Resources.
