2019 Lakes and Ponds Seminar

Join the Federation of Vermont Lakes and Ponds (FOVLAP) and the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) on the shores of Lake Morey next month to celebrate Vermont’s lakes and ponds and meet other lake enthusiasts. The all-day seminar will be Friday, June 7, 2019, at the Lake Morey Resort in Fairlee. The public is encouraged to attend.

This year’s theme focuses on how scientists translate research into tangible actions individuals and communities can take to sustain healthy lakes and ponds.

Morning sessions will include a presentation by David Mears, the Executive Director of the Vermont Audubon Society; a book discussion led by author Peter Tobiessen (The Secret Life of a Lake); and a recognition of the volunteer-based Lay Monitoring Program, which as of 2019, has been tracking Vermont lake water quality for 40 years.

In the afternoon, attendees can choose from multiple sessions led by DEC scientists including:

  • Aquatic invasive species management
  • Shoreland management practices
  • Lake protection plans and nutrient management
  • Atmospheric pollution impacts to lakes and ponds

If the weather is good, attendees are invited to end the day with a guided paddle of Lake Morey, courtesy of DEC staff. If you have a canoe or kayak, bring it with you.
