ECO AmeriCorps Members Treat MLK Day as a Day ON And Not a Day Off

MONTPELIER --- ECO AmeriCorps program members will help the Central Vermont Humane Society with a much-needed painting update at the organization’s facility from 9:00 am until 4:00 pm on January 15th, 2018. ECO AmeriCorps members will participate in this service project to honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy. The ECO AmeriCorps members will be joined by hundreds of thousands of volunteers across the country on this national day of service.

“ECO AmeriCorps has proven to be a tremendous resource in helping the state and our community partners achieve Vermont’s environmental goals,” said Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Emily Boedecker. “All of our members provide services and complete projects that may otherwise go undone. By volunteering their time on MLK Day to the Central Vermont Humane Society, ECO AmeriCorps members prove that their service can be extended beyond their host sites. They truly are getting things done for the state of Vermont.”

The MLK Day of Service shines a spotlight on service as a powerful force to bridge economic and social divides – today and throughout the year. Many communities will also engage in dialogue to explore ways they can address important issues. National Days of Service provide Americans with an opportunity to come together with neighbors and local leaders to tackle community challenges and strengthen the nation.

The ECO AmeriCorps program is run by the Vermont DEC. The program’s 24 members are placed in organizations throughout Vermont to serve on a variety of clean water and recycling projects. ECO AmeriCorps is funded in part through an AmeriCorps state grant provided by SerVermont from the Corporation for National and Community Service.
