Willoughby Steelhead Rainbow Trout Are Jumping

 

April 12, 2021 – One of the state’s premier wildlife watching opportunities is taking place in Vermont.  The steelhead rainbow trout have started their upstream migration, leaping up waterfalls in a spectacular display of determination on their way to their spawning grounds.

Steelhead can be spotted moving up the falls during these warmer days in mid-to-late April and sometimes into early May.

Mud Season Trail Closures Begin

 

 

March 29, 2021– The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation (FPR) and its partners remind hikers of mud season at this time of year and ask for the public’s help protecting Vermont’s trails. This year, COVID-19 is still a dominant concern, even with more people vaccinated. FPR and partners are asking for the public’s assistance with making smart choices to protect both public health and trails during this vulnerable time.

State Biologist to Discuss Wetland Conservation for Wildlife and Water Quality    

 

March 26, 2021 – The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) invites the public to join the next Clean Water Series talk on Thursday, April 1, 2021 from 12:00 – 1:00 pm. The talk will highlight wetland conservation and is part of a monthly virtual series featuring efforts to protect and restore water quality in Vermont. 

Vermont State Parks Offers Virtual Job Fair

 

March 25, 2021 - If you have ever been curious about what working in one of Vermont’s State Parks is like, now you have your chance to find out, virtually. On Tuesday, April 6, from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, Vermont State Parks hiring managers will give an online presentation on job opportunities in Vermont State Parks this summer. Additionally, State Parks staff will provide insights, discuss specific job openings, and answer any questions you may have. Of course, you will also learn how to apply for positions and how the hiring process works.

Mortgage Company Fined for Not Cleaning Up Property

 

March 22, 2021 – The Agency of Natural Resources Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced today that Nationstar Mortgage LLC d/b/a Mr. Cooper was fined $13,500 for violating Vermont waste management regulations after failing to promptly remove trash and other waste that was accumulating on a property it owned in West Fairlee.

‘Let’s Go Fishing’ Program Seeks Instructors: Training workshop set for April 17

 

 

March 17, 2021 The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is seeking volunteers to become ‘Let’s Go Fishing’ instructors to pass on Vermont’s fishing tradition to the next generation of Vermonters.  The department will be hosting a one-day training workshop for new instructors on Saturday, April 17 at the Edward F. Kehoe Conservation Camp in Castleton, VT.

Remove Bird Feeders by April 1

 

March 17, 2021 – The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department says warm spring weather and melting snows will cause bears to come out of their winter dens in search of food.  The department recommends taking down bird feeders by April 1 to avoid attracting bears.

“We are already receiving our first bear reports, and the warmer temperatures predicted now will stimulate more bears to emerge from their dens to seek any food sources they can smell,” said Forrest Hammond, Vermont’s bear biologist.

State Announces Green Schools Initiative to Fund Stormwater Mitigation at Public Schools

 

March 16, 2021 - Green Schools Initiative offers funding and technical assistance to help public schools and state colleges meet the Three-Acre General Permit stormwater regulation.

“In partnership with Senator Leahy’s Office and the Lake Champlain Basin Program, the State has secured funds to support stormwater design and permitting for all Three-Acre schools in the Lake Champlain basin that wish to participate,” said Natural Resources Secretary Julie Moore.
